May 16

Date of Service: May 16, 2011
Total Time Spent: 2 hours
Total Time So Far: 30 hours

Actions I Performed: -Making copies of schedules for the next meeting for the Community Fund
-Filled out more postcards!

Next Action: I'm done with my hours, but I told Sue I could do anything she had for me. Last time we spoke, she said she might have something for me to take home and read over for her. We'll see.

How am I Doing?: I finished my hours today! I thanked Sue for this opportunity to let me work with her and her coworkers at the Giants. I told that I would still be willing to do whatever she didn't have time to do herself.

Today, I went to the copy room and made copies of schedules for the next Community Fund meeting. I'm not sure when it's going to happen, but it's going to be sometime this week. I also spent about another 30-45 minutes addressing more postcards. Yeah, a lot of people keep asking for donations. It must be because the Giants are World Champions or something.....

As far as completing more hours with the Community Fund, I'm not sure when they'll have something for me to do, but I've been keeping in contact with Sue and she said she'd let me know when I could help.

More Postcards

Date of Service: May 14, 2011
Time Spent: 2 hours
Total Time So Far: 28 hours

Actions I Performed: -Filled out more postcards for the Community Fund

Next Action: Not sure yet.

How am I Doing?: I'm doing good right now for my project. I'm almost done with my hours. Even though I've been doing a lot of the same stuff, I like working with Sue and all the people in the Community Fund that I have met so far. Everyone's been really nice to me and really helping me get my hours in. Today, I filled out more postcards asking for donations. I think I've addressed about 300-400 of these postcards.

Grab Bags

Date of Service: May 11, 2011
Time Spent: 2 hours
Total Time So Far: 26 hours

Actions I Performed: -Sold Mystery Grab Bags

Next Action: I'm not quite sure yet.

How am I Doing?: I went to the game and sold more mystery grab bags as people were walking into the park. Like FanFest, we sold out pretty quickly. I'm not quite sure how much money was made from selling the grab bags, but at $20 per bag, I'm sure we made a good amount.

May 10, 2011

Date of Service: May 10, 2011
Time Spent: 3 hours
Total Time So Far: 24 hours

Actions I Performed: -I filled out more postcards for the Community Fund for 3 long hours

Next Action: I think I'm selling more Mystery Grab Bags at the game tonight. I believe I have more postcards to fill out as well.

How am I Doing?: I went and saw Sue yesterday. She didn't have much for me to do except more postcards, so I filled out more of those. They get a lot more requests for donations than I had thought. I really didn't know that it took this much into running a nonprofit organization. I thought it was just about doing some fundraising and then giving some of the money to other organizations that are deserving. After talking with Sue these past couple of times we met, it's crazy to see how much that they actually do.

Update

How am I Doing?: I have more hours to do later today. I'm not sure what I'm doing yet. Sue told me that we might be filling out more postcards because a lot more people and/or organizations have been sending in mail asking for donations. I plan on asking her how much money they have raise so far and if they have raised more than in previous years. I also plan on asking her how much of the money raised goes to commnuity efforts.

Sunday, May 8

Date of Service: May 8, 2011
Time Spent: 2 hours
Total Time So Far: 21 hours

Actions I Performed: -Filled out post cards going to organizations asking for donations from the Community Fund
-Talked to my mentor about the Junior Giants Commissioners' Meeting yesterday

Next Action: Sue said she would contact me when she would have something for me to do. We've been staying in contact almost everyday.

How am I Doing?: Sue told me that I didn't have to sell Mystery Grab Bags because it was Mother's Day and didn't want me to spend all day at the ballpark. So instead of selling Grab Bags, Sue had me fill out postcards. The postcards were from people and/or organizations asking for donations from the Community Fund. Sue said that they don't have time to get to all the donations so they look at them one by one later on. The postcards were just informing the people/organizations that they could ask for donations through the internet so they don't have as much mail coming in for donations.

We also talked about the Commissioners' Meeting I helped set up for yesterday. I asked why they have this meeting and Sue said it was to make sure that they have a good season and to help new commissioners get "in the swing of things." I got to work with four college students from Cal Poly at the meeting who were there for research.

Junior Giants

Date of Service: May 7, 2011
Time Spent: 6 hours
Total Time So Far: 19 hours

Actions I Performed: -Set up Junior Giants Commissioners meeting
-Talked with my mentor, Sue Petersen, and Junior Giants coordinator, Nicole Zongus about the programs involved with the Junior Giants program.
-Handed out canvas print pictures to Junior Giants Commissioners.

Next Action: Sue is looking to set up a day for me to sell Mystery Grab Bags for the Community Fund.

How am I Doing?: I have been talking to Sue, Blaine, and Nicole and they have been telling me what they do to keep the Community Fund going. Today at the Junior Giants Commissioners meeting, they discussed all the programs offered inside of the Junior Giants program to help kids make better decisions in their futures. The Community Fund gave out more information of their education, health, and violence prevention programs so I was learning about all of that today. I'm starting to realize how much work goes with running a nonprofit organization.
